Breast revision surgery can improve the results of a previous breast augmentation or breast implant procedure. Over time, you might decide that you would like to replace your implants with new ones, change implant size, or address issues due to age. At VPSI in Las Vegas, NV, our doctors offer breast revision surgery to alleviate discomfort caused by capsular contracture, address breast asymmetry, and more.

The Benefits of Getting a Breast Revision

In many cases, getting breast revision surgery is based entirely on aesthetics. For example, patients who got implants when they were in their 20s or 30s may decide, years later, that they do not wish to have quite so much breast volume after all.

Additional reasons to pursue breast revision include:

Types of Breast Revision

Micromastia, also referred to as hypomastia, occurs when your breasts do not develop correctly, resulting in the abnormal smallness of the mammary glands. Breast augmentation can address undersized breasts by enlarging the breasts with implants or fat grafting to add volume where it is needed.

Symmastia is a condition in which both breasts cross the midline of the chest and appear to merge. Breast revision can correct this issue and create more natural-looking cleavage.

Symmastia repair involves:

  • Expanding the breast implant pocket
  • Repositioning the implants
  • Reconnecting the overlying skin and muscle to create enough space between the breasts

After receiving implants, your body naturally forms a protective scar tissue capsule around the breast implants. If the capsule becomes too firm and tight, it may distort the implants, this is called capsular contracture, and you may require breast revision. Capsulectomy repair involves removing the implants and sometimes replacing them with new ones for a renewed appearance.

What Is the Difference Between Breast Revision and Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation is a procedure intended to enhance the volume of your breasts with either implants or fat transfer. In comparison, breast revision corrects specific breast issues related to the breast implants themselves, and it often involves replacing older implants with new implants.

Recovery and Aftercare

We recommend resting and healing for about a week before resuming normal activities and taking a whole month off before continuing strenuous exercise. Swelling and tenderness may occur over the first few days of recovery but should subside on their own. We will provide pain management options to help with any discomfort and offer aftercare instructions to facilitate a smooth and expedient recovery.

Breast Revision Surgery Frequently Asked Questions

Breast asymmetry occurs when one breast is smaller or larger than the other and is one of the most common reasons to seek a breast revision. Revision surgery can correct breast asymmetry and help you achieve a more balanced appearance.

It often takes a few months for implants to settle into place, meaning that the final result can sometimes be different from what you first expected. This period is known as the “drop and fluff” process, which can take from six weeks to six months to complete. If your implants do not look right after this period, you may require a breast revision. Our doctors are board-certified and have unique skills ideal for correcting previously unsuccessful surgeries.

Capsular contracture occurs when the capsule formed around the breast implant is too tight or firm, resulting in implant distortion. A capsulotomy or capsulectomy with implant removal can help relieve the hardening and other symptoms.

A breast lift can correct breasts that droop or sag. Depending on your aesthetic goals, you may benefit from doing this simultaneously with your breast revision. Our doctors can help you determine which treatment option is best for you.

There are always risks involved with surgery, but choosing board-certified plastic surgeons can help mitigate these risks. We are always happy to talk with you about specific risks, including any concerns regarding breast implant illness.

By following the aftercare instructions and maintaining an overall healthy lifestyle, you can extend your breast revision results long term.
