Implant Types for Breast Augmentation: Which is Best for Me?

There are several decisions to make with regard to breast implants, including size, shape, and more. Our surgeons will guide you through the different options to help you achieve your aesthetic goals. One of the most fundamental choices is which type of implant to get. Those made of silicone tend to be more viscous than their saline equivalents, resulting in a more natural look and feel. In other words, many patients find that silicone breast implants are the ones that most closely resemble natural breast tissue.

Saline breast implants are inserted as empty shells, and once positioned, they are filled with a sterilized saline solution. While this can sometimes create an unnatural “rippling” appearance, saline implants have the advantage of being inserted while unfilled, which means that they can be placed with the most minimal incisions, helping to decrease long-term scarring.

An alternative to breast implants is a breast augmentation with fat transfer. This approach involves harvesting fat from one part of the body, often the abdomen or thigh, and using that tissue to enhance the breasts. This approach is recommended if there are concerns about mechanical or physiological issues related to silicone implants (breast implant illness or BIA-ALCL), and you have a desire to avoid having a foreign body inside.
