As the body ages, the skin loses some of its natural elasticity. This loss of skin elasticity, known as elastosis, can result in loose, sagging skin, wrinkles, fine lines, and jowls. While these can be unwelcome signs of age, a surgical procedure known as the facelift can minimize or conceal these age signs. At VPSI, our board-certified Las Vegas doctors look at facelifts from a global perspective to tighten your skin and put the deeper levels of your face back where they belong. Our custom facelift procedures improve skin quality, readjust volume loss, and improve mechanical change to restore a youthful appearance.

What Is a Facelift?

A facelift, technically known as a rhytidectomy, is a cosmetic surgery performed by a plastic surgeon to address visible signs of aging in the face and neck. It aims to achieve a more youthful appearance.

The Benefits of Facelift

If you have moderate to severe facial aging, getting a facelift can improve your overall aesthetic. Some specific benefits include:

Good Candidates for a Las Vegas Facelift

The best way to determine your candidacy for a facelift is to schedule an appointment. At your initial consultation, one of our doctors will evaluate and verify your eligibility for a safe, successful facelift procedure.

A Facelift is Great For You If:

  • You are experiencing moderate to severe facial aging, including loose, sagging skin. You do not have major underlying medical conditions and are in good overall health.
  • You have a healthy outlook and realistic expectations about the procedure.

What Is the Best Age for a Facelift?

As a rule of thumb, facelifts are usually not recommended for anyone under 30. In most cases, a facelift works best for patients in their 40s, 50s, and 60s when signs of aging become prevalent. If you are 30 or younger, we recommend a non-surgical option to address your facial concerns.

What Types of Facelift Procedures Are There?

Surgical Facelifts

These are traditional facelift procedures that involve incisions and address deeper structural concerns to achieve a more dramatic and long-lasting rejuvenation. Here are some common types:

  • Classic Facelift (Full Facelift): This is the most comprehensive facelift, addressing loose skin and wrinkles across the mid-face, jowls, and neck. It involves lifting and tightening the underlying muscles (SMAS layer) for a firmer foundation before redraping the skin.
  • Mini Lift: This targets the lower face and jowls, ideal for patients with mild to moderate sagging. It’s less invasive than a full facelift with a shorter recovery time.
  • Deep Plane Facelift: This technique goes deeper than the SMAS layer, addressing laxity in facial ligaments and muscles for a more substantial and longer-lasting lift.
  • SMAS Lift: This focuses on repositioning and tightening the SMAS layer, providing a smoother and more youthful contour. It’s often incorporated into other facelift procedures.
  • Neck Lift (Platysmaplasty): This addresses looseness and excess skin specifically in the neck area, often performed in conjunction with a facelift.

Non-Surgical Facelifts

These are minimally invasive procedures or injectable treatments that offer subtle rejuvenation without surgery. They’re suitable for patients with mild concerns or those seeking to delay surgical intervention.

  • Liquid Facelift: This involves injectable fillers (like JUVÉDERM) and neuromodulators (like BOTOX®) to plump wrinkles, enhance volume, and achieve a smoother appearance. Results are temporary, typically lasting several months.

Ultimately, the best type of facelift procedure depends on your individual concerns, desired outcome, and level of comfort with surgery. Consulting a board-certified plastic surgeon will help determine the most suitable option for you.

Facelift Procedure Process Explained

At VPSI, we want you to feel entirely comfortable moving forward with your surgery. For this reason, we make sure that you have a detailed consultation where we work together to design your customized treatment plan. Before surgery, our team will take the time to guide you through pre and post-op preparations to promote your comfort and prompt recovery.

Our friendly team will guide you through our surgery center and prepare you for the procedure. Once you are comfortably under anesthesia, your doctor will make small incisions to minimize visible scarring, typically behind the hairline, ears, or under the chin.

The specific steps in the process can vary depending on your goals and expectations. Still, generally speaking, your doctor will remove excess tissue, pull the skin tighter, and reposition the remaining tissues to ensure a firmer, smoother facial appearance.

Facelift Recovery & Aftercare

The first week is essential for your healing and recovery following a facelift; you can expect some swelling and bruising. The doctor will provide prescription medication if needed, and these symptoms can last for two weeks or longer.

Our doctor will wrap your face with supportive dressings that stay in place for 48 to 72 hours. We will remove these dressings during a post-surgical appointment, and your doctor will provide additional guidance depending on where you are in your healing journey.

The final results of your facelift should be visible in about 4 to 6 weeks, once the swelling has subsided.

Facelift FAQs

Combining a facelift procedure with a neck lift may be the best way to obtain your desired results. Our doctors are happy to provide additional information about incorporating a neck lift.

The Benefits of a Neck Lift

Neck lifts are great for rejuvenating neck tissue, achieving better contour, and tightening the skin from the neck up. Often, a neck lift has the most powerful impact on overall facial appearance.

What Is Neck Lift Surgery Like?

Neck lifts can be performed simultaneously with a facelift and include incisions behind the ears and end in the posterior hair. The procedure involves sculpting or redistributing fat from the jowls and the neck, repositioning the tissue below the neck skin, and tightening the muscles.

What Should I Expect in Terms of Recovery?

Recovery from a neck lift is similar to that of a facelift. While swelling and bruising are common, these symptoms will resolve independently after a few weeks. If your custom treatment plan includes a neck lift, we advise resting and healing for two weeks.

With facial fat grafting, we harvest unwanted fat from one part of the body, often the abdomen or the thighs, and then transfer it to the face. Here the fat is carefully sculpted and used to provide added volume.

The Benefits of a Facial Fat Transfer

A facial fat transfer is good if you desire more facial fullness but do not have crepey skin or neck issues. Fat grafting can improve skin quality, volume loss, and contouring and primarily enhances cheek volume.

What is Fat Grafting Like?

We carefully harvest your fat using a liposuction procedure, and it is then cleaned and purified. Your fat cells are then injected into your existing facial tissue and shaped for optimal aesthetic results.

What Should I Expect in Terms of Recovery?

Following a facial fat transfer, you can expect some swelling. It may be a few weeks before you get a clear sense of the final results. You will need to rest and heal for about a week before resuming normal activities.

While a facelift is an effective procedure for achieving a more youthful look, it does involve some discomfort during recovery. Here’s what you can expect:

  • Pain Level: Pain after a facelift is usually described as mild to moderate. You’ll likely experience some tenderness, tightness, and discomfort around the incision sites for the first few days.
  • Management: Your doctor will prescribe pain medication to help manage any discomfort. Applying cold compresses to the treated areas can also help reduce swelling and alleviate pain.
  • Timeline: The most intense discomfort is typically felt within the first 2-4 days after surgery. With medication and proper care, the pain should gradually subside within the first week.

How Long Will My Facelift Results Last?

By following post-op instructions and maintaining a healthy lifestyle, you can extend your results for a long time. Non-surgical treatments, like BOTOX® and dermal fillers, can also enhance and sustain your results over the long term.
